In 1998 the Grand Chute Fire Department began delivering emergency medical services at the first responder level in a tiered response system with Gold Cross Ambulance. Under this tiered system, fire personnel provided EMS first response patient care prior to the arrival of Gold Cross Ambulance, or in conjunction with their personnel already on scene. Recognizing the value of these services and seeking to have an even greater impact on the care for those in our community, our organization upgraded to the emergency medical technician non-transport service level in 2014. With this increase in service, firefighters received additional training which enhanced their ability to assess and treat patients utilizing advanced level skills and interventions not available at the first responder level.
Continuing to realize the value of providing the highest level of pre-hospital care to the citizens and visitors of Grand Chute in the most timely manner possible, the GCFD once again upgraded its level of EMS service in 2021 when it began providing paramedic-level advanced life support (ALS) first response service in conjunction with our transporting partners. Under this system, every staffed piece of GCFD apparatus is equipped with ALS equipment and personnel.
Realizing how valuable the ALS service was in the community, GCFD revolutionized emergency response in 2023 by launching an on-the-job paramedic training program in conjunction with Fox Valley Technical College. In 2024, the first 3 graduates of the program transitioned into paramedic roles within the department.
As GCFD continues to strive to provide the best emergency response capabilities to the residents, businesses and visitors of Grand Chute, the Town Board unanimously approved the implementation of an ALS ambulance transport service within GCFD starting January 1, 2025.
