Event Venue Alcohol Information
Effective January 1, 2026, 2023 Act 73 amended Wisconsin’s “public place” alcohol law. Under this law, an appropriate alcohol beverage license is required when alcohol is consumed in a public place.
A public place includes any venue, location, open space, room, or establishment that is:- Accessible and available for rent for an event or social gathering;
- Held out for rent to the public for an event or gathering;
- Made available for rent to a member of the public.
Certain exceptions apply and are outlined in Wis. Stat. §125.09.
Under the updated law, any location that meets the definition above must obtain a municipal alcohol license if it intends to allow alcohol consumption on the premises. Applications and additional information regarding municipal retailer licenses are available above.
For questions on a municipal alcohol license, please contact the Clerk's Office at 920-832-5644 or clerklicenses@grandchutewi.gov.
There is also an option to obtain a No-Sale Event Venue Permit from the Department of Revenue: Division of Alcohol Beverages (DAB). The permit may be applied for and is issued by DAB. These are a best fit for event spaces that hold a minimal number of events. Event Venue Permits:- Allow carry-ins of beer and wine on the event venue property at only 6 events per year, no more than 1 per month.
- Allow carry-in of fermented malt beverages (beer) and wine only – no distilled spirits of any kind may be on the venue property when it is being used by a renter or lessee per Wis. Stat. §125.24(2)(b)2.
For questions on a no-sale event venue permit, contact the Department of Revenue: Division of Alcohol Beverages.
